Furniture making workshop at Baniyala
Project Partner
Cultivate NT provided training for an MEP activity at Baniyala making various furniture items from recycled timber from used pallets. This activity was a departure from the general primary production capacity building supported by Cultivate NT and was done with members of both Baniyala and Rurrangala communities. MEP provided a range of tools and ongoing supervision for the program while Rod Baker spent two weeks working with participants teaching a range of joinery techniques and safe use of the tools.
Participants initially made coffee tables, boxes and cupboard from the pine timber salvaged from locally discarded pallets. It is hoped that with continued practice the participants skills level continues to improve resulting in higher quality furniture products that could then be sold. This was a very successful activity as each day participants had tangible achievements that made them feel some pride in accomplishment.
